Európa majdnem fél évszázadon keresztül erőszakosan ketté volt osztva „Nyugatra” és „Keletre”. Az EuroVelo 13 útvonal ennek az úgynevezett vasfüggönynek a nyomvonalát követi a Barents-tengertől a Fekete-tengerig: 9950 km élő történelemóra, a hidegháborús korszaknak és a vasfüggöny lehullása utáni kibékülések, a béke első nyomainak emlékeivel. Mivel ez a leghosszabb EuroVelo útvonal, a Vasfüggöny útvonal mindenféle kerékpáros látogatónak lehetőséget nyújt, Dél-Csehország vagy Észak-Ausztria borvidékeitől kezdve a Dráva folyóvölgyén át Bulgária és Görögország hegyvidékes határáig, vagy a balti államok nyüzsgő kikötőjétől Lappföld csendes tájaiig. A Vasfüggöny kerékpáros útvonal létrejöttét számos európai intézmény támogatta. 2005-ben az Európai Parlament a Vasfüggöny utat az Európai Unió tagállamainak fenntartható turisztikai modelljének ismerte el. Ez a zöldpárti Michael Cramer kezdeményezése volt, aki korábban a Berlini Fal útvonalat is elindította a német fővárosban.
